
9 Historic Moments in Wimbledon’s History
· Level 1: 1920 - 1921: Playing in the Athenian League, this was an amateur league for clubs in and around London. Wimbledon came 2nd and was promoted to play in the Isthmian League next season.
· Level 2: 1963 - 1964: Playing in the Isthmian League, this league covered London, East and South East England. Semi-Professional clubs played in this league. After winning this league in the past three consecutive seasons ( “61 - “62, “62 - “63, and “63 - “64) Wimbledon were promoted to play in the Southern Football League First Division.
· Level 3: 1964 - 1965: Wimbledon played in the Southern Football League First Division for the first time. This league was still semi-professional. Wimbledon came 2nd in this season and was promoted to play in the Southern Football League Premier Division next season.
· Level 4: 1976 - 1977: Wimbledon is playing in the Southern Football League Premier Division, have been for a few seasons now, this is still semi-professional. They won this season, as well as the two seasons prior ( “74 - “75 / “75 - “76). The win this season promoted them to Division 4. Now playing Professionally.
· Level 5: 1978 - 1979: This is Wimbledon’s second season In Division 4. They came 3rd this season which qualified them to be promoted into Division 3.
· Level 6: 1983 - 1984: After a handful of seasons of moving up and down between Division 3 and 4, Wimbledon were able to come 2nd in Division 3, and for the first time they would be playing in Division 2 next season.
· Level 7: 1985 - 1986: The season prior, Wimbledon were able to keep their place in Division 2, by coming 12th. This season they were able to come 3rd, which promoted them into Division 1 next season.
· Level 8: 1987 - 1988: This was the second season Wimbledon played in Division 1. Between 1888 and 1992, Division 1 was the top tier Division in the English Football League, where the top 22 clubs would play. Despite this being Wimbledon’s 2nd season in Division 1, they were able to beat Liverpool 1-0 and win the FA Cup Final. This would be their first and only win
· Level 9: 1993 - 1994. As of 1992, The English Football League was restructured, at the top was now the Premier League, where the top 22 teams now played (this has since been changed to the top 20 teams). Below this was now Division 1 (until that was rebranded to the Championship League in 2004) then Division 2. Arguably this point in Wimbledon’s History was roughly their height. They were playing professionally in the Premier League, and this season they came 6th.
